Sanford Health to award $1 million prize

December 14, 2017

On Jan. 1, Sanford Health will open nominations for the inaugural Sanford Lorraine Cross Award. To be given once every other year, beginning in 2018, it will be among the world’s most lucrative awards recognizing innovation in health care.

“This award will inspire important conversations and bring forward life-changing treatments and medical innovations to change health care as we know it,” said David Pearce, Ph.D., executive vice president for innovation and research at Sanford Health.

Eight key things to know:

1.    Who is eligible for the award?

Any non-Sanford Health scientist, researcher, physician, post-doc or fellow pursuing medical innovations is eligible.

Nominees will be evaluated on multiple levels, including the significance of an innovation and its contribution to science, clinical practice, patient lives or public health. The innovators will be evaluated based on their professional contributions and personal history and characteristics.

2.    Who is the ideal candidate?

The health system is seeking modern-day crusaders who are behind lifesaving treatments, medical innovations and transformative ideas that have the potential to transform the future of health care.

3.    What is the story behind the award’s name?

For centuries, the two-barred symbol of the Lorraine Cross has been synonymous with those who take action for their passions.

Today, the Cross is a proud part of the Sanford Health identity — a symbol of the health system’s crusade to improve the human condition.

4.    Who will choose the winner?

Experts from the scientific and medical communities will vet the nominees and choose three finalists. From that group, the Sanford International Board will choose the winner.

Nominations for the award open on Jan. 1, 2018, and close Feb. 28, 2018.

5.    When will the winner be announced?

The final three nominees will be honored, and the award recipient will be announced live at an event on Dec. 5, 2018.

6.    Where does the prize money come from?

The intent is that the award will be sustained through an endowment established by donors to the Sanford Health Foundation.

The award recipient is free to use the prize money as he or she wishes, however, Sanford Health hopes that the prize money will further the winner’s pursuit of transformational change.
